Ah Ah: Conscience Letters and Photographs from the Haleakala & Hawai'i Volcanoes National Parks
Regular price $44.16The sequel to Bad Luck, Hot Rocks includes more rueful letters from repentant tourists, this time on stealing lava rocks from Hawai'i
Following a trail of regret from the Petrified Forest (the subject of his classic Bad Luck, Hot Rocks) to the islands of Maui and Hawai'i, artist and educator Ryan Thompson considers the implications of another trove of handwritten apologies, this time from the archives of the Haleakala and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Parks. Written to accompany chunks of volcanic rock and other objects that tourists have pilfered from the Islands and subsequently returned (because of bad luck or bad conscience), the notes and letters express not only a need for forgiveness but also an awareness of the writers' relationship to the Hawaiian landscape, and perhaps also to earth itself--a taking-and-returning phenomenon that (as noted in his earlier book) is its own form of absolution and self-help. Ah Ah weaves together Thompson's own black-and-white travelog with vibrantly colored "portraits" of the returned specimens and facsimiles of selected letters into an endearing reflection on humanity's troubling (but hopeful) entanglement with geology, colonialism and tourism in the Anthropocene.

Joel Meyerowitz: Europa 1966-1967
Regular price $73.72A photographic travelog of Meyerowitz’s yearlong journey across postwar Europe
In 1966, at the age of 28, photographer Joel Meyerowitz embarked on a journey that would take him to the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Eastern Europe, Turkey and Greece. In total, he drove 20,000 miles through 10 countries and ended up taking 25,000 photographs. This trip was a transcendental experience and formative in shaping Meyerowitz's instinctive and brilliant identity that he is known for today. Europa 1966–1967 compiles a selection of photographs taken by Meyerowitz on his yearlong trip through Europe, offering an exciting glimpse of the “New Old World” that, having lately overcome the trauma of World War II, opened itself to modernity and progress. Meyerowitz witnessed societies in transition, stuck between dictatorship and economic blossoming. Yet he also documented unshakable cultural traditions, such as when he lived with a flamenco-performing family in Francoist Spain for six months. The strength and freshness of Meyerowitz’s gaze and the new codes that were captured in these pictures inspired the next generation of photographers.

Mi Cocina
Regular price $51.60In his first, much-anticipated cookbook, New York Times contributor, Food52 columnist, and former Bon Appétit food editor Rick Martínez introduces home cooks to the diverse culinary treasures of Mexico. In Mi Cocina, Rick travels to each of the seven regions in Mexico to explore 100 unique dishes, the recipe for each accompanied by stunning on-site photography.
In this beautifully personal tribute, Rick expresses Mexico’s regionality through dishes like Oaxaca’s Mole Coloradito (made with pasilla chiles, dried fruits, nuts, seeds, plantain, and bittersweet chocolate) and Tacos de Capeados (cornmeal-battered fried fish tacos with papaya and tomatillo) from coastal Baja. His recipes are based on his favorite home-tested version of each dish, veering from tradition when inspired—like in the Tlayuda con Tasajo in which a flank steak is marinated with miso paste before being grilled and added to a large tostada topped with refried beans

Stanley Whitney: How High the Moon
Regular price $110.58The esteemed American painter Stanley Whitney has, for 50 years, created joyful, immersive abstractions characterized by a bold, experimental palette and unique rhythm. Over the last 20 years, he has structured his paintings as loose grids: a consistent framework that frees him to work through seemingly infinite painterly variations and allows viewers to focus not on each painting’s subject, but rather on our own response to color. These large-scale paintings are joined by improvisatory small paintings; drawings and prints, which constitute their own practice for Whitney; and the artist’s sketchbooks, which offer a view into Whitney’s engagement with the written word and politics.
This traveling North American exhibition is Whitney’s first museum survey, presenting 170 paintings and works on paper spanning from the 1970s to the present day. The catalog includes an introduction by exhibition organizer Cathleen Chaffee, scholarly explorations of the artist’s paintings and works on paper, a chronology and illustrations of all works in the exhibition.
Stanley Whitney was born in 1946 near Philadelphia. By the early 1970s, following studies with Philip Guston and Robert Reed, and influenced by artists including Jack Whitten, Josef Albers and Piet Mondrian, he had come to see “endless possibilities” in abstraction. Over the past five decades, he has honed a unique body of densely gridded, but endlessly variable, abstract paintings, as well as drawings and prints, reflecting his interests in art, architecture, textiles and music.

Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot's Russia
Regular price $66.35The Russian art collective and activist group Pussy Riot, formed in Moscow in 2011, is famous for its spontaneous and courageous actions challenging the Russian regime. Edited by Maria (Masha) Alyokhina, member and cofounder of the feminist-activist performance collective, this volume compiles, in chronological order, the last decade-plus of Pussy Riot’s happenings in Russia. Recurrent themes in the group’s feminist, anti-Putin practice include freedom of expression, human rights, LGBTQ+ rights and the release of political prisoners, while recent actions and works feature anti-war statements and support for Ukraine. Accompanying the eponymous traveling exhibition—the group’s largest presentation of work to date and its first-ever museum show—it is bolstered by a vast selection of photos and video stills, as well as personal accounts from the group’s members. In addition to documenting the performances themselves, the catalog chronicles the consequences of these nonviolent public actions for those who took part: these include arrests, beatings, imprisonment, poisoning, surveillance and house arrest. In addition to the iconic performances, such as Punk Prayer (2012), the exhibition catalog also documents a wide range of lesser-known actions as well as the escape from Russia of some of Pussy Riot’s key members in 2022. Told from the perspective of the Pussy Riot activists themselves, the exhibition and accompanying catalog provide a critical and timely insight into the evolution of Putin’s Russia over the past 10 years, including the military invasion of Ukraine.

Firelei Baez
Regular price $88.46“Her language for exploring [history] is at once serious and exuberant.” –Siddhartha Mitter, New York Times
Over the last 15 years, Firelei Báez has created artwork that delves into the historical narratives of the Atlantic Basin. She draws on the disciplines of anthropology, geography, folklore, fantasy, science fiction and social history to unsettle categories of race, gender and nationality in her paintings, drawings and installations. Her exuberant paintings feature finely wrought, complex and layered uses of pattern, motifs and saturated hues. Primarily centering women of color, her works incorporate regal fashion styles and decorative elements as well as defiant gazes in order to assert their authority.
In advance of her North American traveling solo exhibition, this lushly illustrated book offers audiences an opportunity to gain a holistic understanding of Báez’s complex body of work, cementing her as one of today's most important artists. Partly inspired by artists’ sketchbooks, the monograph includes full-spread reproductions of the artist’s preparatory sketches alongside annotations, source images and close-up details of her artworks. Numerous scholars contribute thoughtful, reverent texts, weighing in on Báez’s indelible mark on the contemporary art landscape.
The Dominican Republic–born artist Firelei Báez (born 1981) reworks visual references drawn from diasporic histories in order to imagine new possibilities for the future, overlaying figuration, symbolic imagery and abstract gesture onto large-scale reproductions of found maps and documents. She then populates these representations with hybrid forms composed of folkloric and literary references, textile patterns and plant life.

This stunning volume compiles a series he has been working on for more than six years that captures the powerful allure of the surf culture on the North Shore of O'ahu, Hawai'i. In addition to studio portraiture of surfers, lifeguards, surfboard shapers, photographers, bodysurfers and bodyboarders, he includes action shots of his subjects scanning the horizon and then catching and flying down the line on 40-foot waves. Focused on the specific stretch of coast known as the Seven Mile Miracle, his images paint a stunning portrait of one of the most legendary proving grounds for big wave watermen and women.

Bruce Gilden: Haiti
Regular price $81.09Dramatic, confrontational images of a country enduring inconceivable upheaval and disaster
Bruce Gilden first traveled to Haiti in 1984 for the famous Mardi Gras festivities. There he discovered an impoverished territory in the grip of numerous natural disasters but charged with a unique energy. True to form, Gilden immediately departed from the beaten track, choosing to roam the length and breadth of the island along serpentine paths that led him to meet people from the four corners of the island, and into situations that few would choose to encounter.
Gilden was to visit this country that he loves so much on 20 further occasions, tirelessly documenting the everyday lives of Haitians, their history and terrain. From vendors at the markets of major cities to its nightlife and funeral ceremonies, Gilden strives to take stock of Haitian culture and its rich visual diversity.
Images from the series were first published as a slim monograph by Dewi Lewis in 1996; the book won the European Publishers Award for Photography. Atelier EXB’s beautifully printed new volume greatly expands the series with previously unseen images comprising nearly half of the book.

BEYOND THE STREETS Publishing is pleased to announce The Light of the Beast, an expanded 2023 version of the acclaimed book originally released in 2020 by multidisciplinary artist Pablo Allison – featuring extra graffiti-related content, with 100 new and never-before-seen additional images.
The Light of the Beast is the culmination of six years of work documenting migrants traveling from Central America, through Mexico and into the United States as a final destination. Since 2007, British/Mexican artist Pablo Allison has tried to understand life and its intricacies by documenting migration and its consequences. What started off as a series of illegal voyages on freight trains in Mexico, with no clear destination, resulted in photographing people escaping extreme violence and poverty.

Kehinde Wiley: The World Stage: Israel
Regular price $58.97Kehinde Wiley’s acclaimed World Stage series inserts into the language of old master portraiture the very ethnicities and ethnic iconography that western art has most excluded from it, or that western art has portrayed solely in colonial, Orientalist terms. Among the countries and continents he has previously depicted in this ambitious traveling epic are Brazil, Africa, China, India and Sri Lanka.
The rhetoric of Wiley’s paintings is powerful in its compositional candor, color palette and playfulness with constructions of visual meaning; as Paul D. Miller (DJ Spooky) notes, “Wiley’s canvas surfaces are a mirror reflection of America’s unceasing search for new meanings from the ruins of the Old World of Europe and Africa.” This volume includes a selection of new World Stage portraits, focusing on contemporary youth from Jewish-Ethiopian-Israeli, Jewish-Israeli and Arab-Israeli communities.

GAYFACE: Ash Kolodner
Regular price $73.72From 2011 to 2015, Brooklyn-based photographer Ash Kolodner (born 1987) traveled across the United States photographing hundreds of LGBTQ+ individuals of all ages. They made two consecutive portraits of each of their subjects, photographing them twice during the same sitting: once with eyes closed and then with eyes open. These diptychs symbolize the vulnerability many have felt at the outset of discovering their personal identities, and then the realization and self-actualization manifest in the intimate and profound process of coming out.
Through more than 180 color portraits, along with subject interviews and contributing texts by filmmaker Kimberly Peirce and Tony award-winning producer Jordan Roth, and icon and performer, RuPaul, Gayface reflects the beauty, intimacy and sometimes the pain of a community kept in the shadows for decades. Ultimately these pictures and this handsome volume represent a revelatory statement on the profound humanity we all share.

Menu No 3: Lobster, Smoke, Allium, Tomato, Vanilla, Olive Oil
Regular price $11.79
The third in an imaginative series of small books, each of which offers a charming dinner menu. There is an emphasis on reducing food waste by thoughtful use of ingredients, and on careful preparation to prevent last minute fuss.
There are twelve different recipes in this small book (5" x 7", 36 pages). In addition to Voll's notes on shopping and cooking ahead, there is also a short rumination on preserving that may include the first reference to Homer we've seen prefacing a jam recipe.
Menu No. 3 offers recipes for
As for author Brian Voll, a self-taught, trial-and-error, home cook, he says,
I was born in Indiana to a mother who loved to cook and considered her kitchen a laboratory to try any and every interesting or unusual recipe that she came across. Her five children were her guinea pigs, and when a recipe turned out, we ate very well. When a recipe didn’t turn out, we ate a lot of pizza.
Since moving to New York ages ago, I’ve been recreating that dynamic among my chosen family in my little kitchen. Each of my cookbooklets is a distillation of a really good night when everybody ate very well, when the recipes I’d been tinkering with finally came together. The series is as much a memoir as it is a collection of recipes. Embedded within each page are the kinds of things I like to cook—inspired by travels around the world and New York City, rooted in my friends and family, and grounded in how I think about cooking: solving the puzzle for maximizing flavor and minimizing waste.
My hope is that these stories inspire people to take pleasure in home cooking with good friends.

Menu No 2: Chicken, Aromatic Herbs, Fennel, Chili, Orange, Fig, Buttermilk
Regular price $11.79The second in an imaginative series of small books, each of which offers a charming dinner menu. The Italian word sprezzatura is mentioned early in this volume, referring to studied carelessness or effortless elegance. It's most apt.
The 7 recipes in this small book (5" x 7", 36 pages), are accompanied by a shopping list as well as notes on what author Brian Voll calls Get Ahead. You can make the jam you'll need months in advance, and the panna cotta you'll serve it alongside will hold for two days in the refrigerator. Resourcefully-minded cooks will note that buttermilk, parsley, dill, and lemons, all do double or triple duty, reducing waster

Menu No 1: Rabbit, Winter Squash, Eggplant, Anchovy, Almond
Regular price $11.79
The first in a series of small books, each dedicated to a thoughtfully composed dinner menu that acknowledges seasonality, strives to reduce food waste, and respects a cook's interest in good food.
There are just 9 recipes in this small book (5" x 7", 36 pages), but they are accompanied by a shopping list as well as what Brian Voll calls distributing the burden. Make the peach butter a month ahead (you will have several jars, so you can enjoy some of it immediately). The savory granola can be made weeks out, and so too the whiskey cocktail. And when you make the amaretti for dessert, you'll use the peach kernel from the jam.
In exchange for your interest in his modest plan, Voll will invite you to step ever-so-slightly outside your comfort zone.

Regular price $66.35Since 1985, photographer Phyllis Galembo has traveled extensively to photograph sites of ritual dress in Africa and the Caribbean. In her latest body of work, collected in this new publication, Galembo turns to Mexico, where she captures cultural performances with a subterranean political edge. Using a direct, unaffected portrait style, Galembo captures her subjects informally posed but often strikingly attired in traditional or ritualistic dress.
Masking is a complex tradition in which the participants transcend the physical world and enter the spiritual realm. Masks, costumes and body paint transform the human body and encode a rich range of political, artistic, theatrical, social and religious meanings on the body. In her vibrant color photographs, Galembo highlights the artistry of the performers, how they use materials from their immediate environment to morph into a fantastical representation of themselves and an idealized vision of a mythical figure. In a gorgeous, fascinating photographic survey of Mexico’s masking practices, Galembo captures her subjects suspended between past, present and future, with their religious, political and cultural affiliations—their personal and collective identifications—displayed on their bodies.
Photographer Phyllis Galembo (born 1952) received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1977, and was Professor in the Fine Arts Department of SUNY Albany from 1978 to 2018. A 2014 Guggenheim Fellow, Galembo has photographs in numerous public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Public Library. Her photographs of ritual masks in Africa, the Diaspora and beyond have been the subject of several monographic publications, including Maske(Aperture, 2016).

Gordon Parks: Pittsburgh Grease Plant, 1944/46
Regular price $70.77By 1944, Gordon Parks had established himself as a photographer who freely navigated the fields of press and commercial photography, with an unparalleled humanist perspective. That year, Roy Stryker—the former Farm Security Administration official who was now heading the public relations department for the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey)—commissioned Parks to travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to document the Penola, Inc. Grease Plant.
Employing his signature style, Parks spent two years chronicling the plant’s industry—critical to Pittsburgh’s history and character—by photographing its workers. The resulting photographs, dramatically staged and lit and striking in their composition, showed the range of activities engaged in by Black and white workers, divided as they were by roles, race and class. The images were used as marketing materials and made available to local and national newspapers, as well as corporate magazines and newsletters. However, they served as much more than documentation of industry, enduring as an exploration of labor and its social and economic ramifications in World War II America by one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
Featuring more than 100 photographs, many previously unpublished, this is the first book to focus exclusively on Parks’ photographs for the Standard Oil Company, illuminating an important chapter in his career prior to his landmark career as a staff photographer for Life.
Gordon Parks was born into poverty and segregation in Fort Scott, Kansas, in 1912. He worked as a brothel pianist and railcar porter, among other jobs, before buying a camera at a pawnshop, training himself and becoming a photographer. In addition to his tenures photographing for the FSA (1941–45) and Life magazine (1948–72), Parks evolved into a modern-day Renaissance man, finding success as a film director, writer and composer. He died in 2006.
