This is the first major survey of artist and fashion designer Cinzia Ruggeri (1942–2019), a unique figure of Italian postmodernism who moved freely across disciplines. From clothing and accessories to furniture and lighting—as well as sculptural installations often including these objects—Ruggeri created worlds that were continually imaginative, provocative, elegant and unpredictable. Ruggeri founded her own fashion line in 1977 and immediately became known for her use of architecture and geometry, such as the ziggurat and representations of the shape of Italy. During her lifetime she also worked and collaborated with Brian Eno, Occhiomagico, Alessandro Mendini, Casa Vogue, Maison Carven and Studio Alchimia. This catalog offers the most complete overview of Ruggeri’s career, thanks to research conducted by MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome) in collaboration with the Archivio Cinzia Ruggeri in Milan.

Between 1973 and ’76, Mitch Epstein (born 1952) photographed in American cities—New York, Los Angeles and New Orleans, among others. He was initially shooting in black and white as a student of Garry Winogrand, when he asked his teacher, “Why not color?” With Winogrand’s blessing, Epstein shot his first rolls of Kodachrome. Silver + Chrome is a chronicle of his three years alternating between color and black and white, before eventually committing to color.

This book contains Epstein’s earliest work, virtually none of which has been seen before. In these kinetic tableaux, the artist’s exuberance is tamed, just barely, by his formal intelligence. He depicts American city life as it undergoes taboo-shattering sexual liberation, economic crises and the repercussions of a boondoggle war in Vietnam, immersing us in the urban chaos of this complicated time.

In recent years, the art and fiction of Surrealist painter and author Leonora Carrington have received much mainstream recognition, but—until now—there has been no authoritative overview of her work. Divided into 10 sections, Revelationintroduces Carrington’s singular artistic universe, displaying an extensive array of her wide-ranging creations (including paintings, drawings and tapestries) and fusing a chronological narrative of her life with a study of the most prominent themes in her work—from her training and early influences in England and Florence to her contact with the Surrealists in Paris, through her time in Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, her traumatic experiences in Spain, her immigration to New York and her new homeland in Mexico. Punctuating the reproductions are archival materials, book excerpts and documentary photographs.

From January 15 to February 12, 1977, more than 15,000 artists, intellectuals and performers from 55 nations worldwide gathered in Lagos, Nigeria, for the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture, also known as FESTAC’77. Taking place in the heyday of Nigeria’s oil wealth and following the African continent’s potent decade of decolonization, FESTAC’77 was the peak of Pan-Africanist expression. Among the musicians, writers, artists and cultural leaders in attendance were Ellsworth Ausby, Milford Graves, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Samella Lewis, Audre Lorde, Winnie Owens, Miriam Makeba, Valerie Maynard, Queen Mother Moore and Sun Ra.

While serving as the photographer for the US contingent of the North American delegation, Brooklyn-based photographer Marilyn Nance made more than 1,500 images throughout the course of the festival―one of the most comprehensive photographic accounts of FESTAC’77. Drawing from Nance’s extensive archive, most of which has never before been published, Last Day in Lagos chronicles the exuberant intensity and sociopolitical significance of this extraordinary event.

In Joan Didion: What She Means, the writer and curator Hilton Als creates a mosaic that explores Didion's life and work and the feeling each generates in her admirers, detractors and critics.
Arranged chronologically, the book highlights Didion's fascination with the two coasts that made her. As a Westerner transplanted to New York, Didion was able to look at her native land, its mores and fixed rules of behavior, with the loving and critical eyes of a daughter who got out and went back. (Didion and her late husband moved from New York to Los Angeles in 1964, where they worked as highly successful screenwriters, producing scripts for 1971's The Panic in Needle Park and 1976's A Star Is Born, among other works, before returning to New York 20 years later.) And from her New York perch, Didion was able to observe the political scene more closely, writing trenchant pieces about Clinton, El Salvador and most searingly the Central Park Five.

The book includes more than 50 artists ranging from Brice Marden and Ed Ruscha to Betye Saar, Vija Clemins and many others, with works in all mediums including painting, ephemera, photography, sculpture, video and film. Also included are three previously uncollected texts by Didion: “In Praise of Unhung Wreaths and Love” (1969); a much-excerpted 1975 commencement address at UC Riverside; and “The Year of Hoping for Stage Magic” (2007).

The meticulous depictions of tattoos by prison guard Danzig Baldaev are reproduced in facsimile, authenticated by his signature and stamp, alongside his handwritten notes on the reverse. The paper has yellowed with age, giving the exquisite drawings a visceral temporality, almost like skin. Sergei Vasiliev’s photographs portray inmates in startling intimacy.

He achieves a remarkable level of trust within the closed criminal society, a strict hierarchy, where outsiders are viewed with hostile suspicion. Arkady Bronnikov’s collection of photographs are shown in the albums in which they were collected. Used exclusively to aid police in their investigations, they depict a motley lineup of assorted body parts.

Our lives are increasingly lived on screens, and every one of our electronic interactions is mediated by a designed interface, which can be buggy and incomprehensible or inviting and accessible. Like other ubiquitous everyday tools, these interfaces are seldom recognized as objects of design—and even less as objects of interactive design. In video games, however, users are acutely aware of their relationship with the interface, making video games compelling examples of this important field of contemporary design.

Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Never Alone: Video Games as Interactive Design explores the impact of interactive design by examining 35 video games created between 1972 and 2018—from Space Invaders (1978) and Pac-Man (1980) to The Sims (2000) and Minecraft (2011). An overarching essay by curators Paola Antonelli, Anna Burckhardt and Paul Galloway presents the pioneering criteria by which MoMA has selected these video games for its collection, as well as the protocols for their acquisition, display and conservation

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the fabric works from the last two decades in the career of legendary artist Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010). “I’ve always had a fascination with the needle,” she once said, “the magic power of the needle. The needle is used to repair damage. It’s a claim to forgiveness.”

This body of work began when the artist started incorporating clothes from all stages of her life into her art, and later expanded to include a range of other textiles such as bed linen, handkerchiefs, tapestry, and needlepoint. The fabric works mine the themes of identity and sexuality, trauma and memory, guilt and reparation, and serve as metaphors for emotional and psychological states.

The catalog—which accompanies the exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London, and the Gropius Bau, Berlin—features works from numerous series, including the monumental Cell installations, figurative sculptures and abstract drawings.

This is the first comprehensive monograph on acclaimed painter Amy Sherald, whose distinctive style of simplified realist portraiture features African American subjects rendered against colorful monochrome backdrops or in everyday settings. Sherald rose to fame after being chosen by former first lady Michelle Obama to paint her official portrait for the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, in 2018, becoming the first African American woman to receive this honor. In addition to reproductions of Sherald’s recent works, the book—published to accompany her solo exhibition at Hauser & Wirth London in fall 2022—includes illustrations of earlier paintings, as well as an intimate glimpse into Sherald’s process and practice through a series of in-studio photographs.

Newly commissioned texts include an art historical analysis of the artist’s work by Jenni Sorkin; a meditation on the politics and aesthetics of Sherald's portraiture by cultural scholar Kevin Quashie; and a conversation between Sherald and acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates.

The SAS House was the most complete commission of Jacobsen’s career, in which he exercised the full range of his talents as a designer of furniture, lamps, textiles, gardens, tableware and graphics. As the fragment that encapsulates the basic ideas of the whole building, Room 606 provides a lens for reconstructing Jacobsen’s vanished masterwork in words and images.

Richly illustrated with nearly 500 photographs and drawings, this book guides the reader on a virtual tour through the Royal Hotel and SAS Air Terminal as they stood in 1960. Along the way, the author reveals the connections between the SAS House and Jacobsen’s earlier buildings and objects. As a result, the tour that begins in Room 606 provides a general introduction to Jacobsen’s career.

Based on his ongoing study of modern Nordic architecture, Michael Sheridan has developed ideas established in his 2003 cult classic—also titled Room 606 and long out of print—to arrive at a fresh perspective on Arne Jacobsen’s life’s work. Using new text and images, Sheridan reveals the essence of Jacobsen’s creative practice, in which he employed technology to heighten the presence of nature.
New York–based architect Michael Sheridan is an internationally recognized authority on modern Danish architecture and design. His earlier books on those subjects include Landmarks: The Modern House in Denmark (2014) and Louisiana: Architecture and Design (2017).

Shabazz began making portraits in the mid-1970s in Brooklyn, Queens, the West Village and Harlem. His camera was also at his side while working as an officer at Rikers Island in the 1980s, where he took portraits of inmates. This book features selections from over a dozen albums, many previously unseen, and includes his earliest photographs as well as images taken inside Rikers Island, all accompanied by essays that situate Shabazz’s work within the broader history of photography.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Jamel Shabazz (born 1960) picked up his first camera at the age of 15 and began documenting his communities, inspired by photographers such as Leonard Freed, James Van Der Zee and Gordon Parks. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including those at the Brooklyn Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Shabazz is the author of Back in the Days (2001) and Sights in the City (2017).

Italian-born photographer, model, actor and political activist Tina Modotti is the subject of the first installment of La Fabrica’s Essentials, a new series of monographs dedicated to the most fundamental names in photography. Modotti’s highly influential career in photography took place entirely during her years living in Mexico, from 1923 to 1930, during which time she was deeply entrenched in Mexico City’s avant-garde scene and produced a total of just over 400 black-and-white photographs.

Before developing her own practice, Modotti was Edward Weston’s favorite model, then lover, darkroom assistant and ultimately, creative partner. She was also close with iconic artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, for whom she photographed many public murals. Her oeuvre, spanning portraiture to photojournalism, fuses the aesthetics of Mexican revolutionary culture and avant-garde photography aesthetics, to which she added the ideals of equality proposed by socialism and her keen political commitment.

In 1964, after three decades of living and working in Harlem, Bearden took up collage, cutting and combining found images and photographs to achieve new combinations defined by their fragmentation, texture, and layered depth. He used this approach to capture the complex facets of Black experience in the United States, often depicting scenes from everyday life in the rural South, which many African Americans left to move to northern cities during the Great Migration (1916–70), and scenes from Harlem. Throughout his career, Bearden reworked his own images in different mediums, including this collage, which is shown alongside a later photo reproduction.

The first monograph on the architectural sculptor and installation artist and long-time collaborator with the New York School poets

Best known for creating large-scale installation work inspired by American vernacular architecture, Dennis finds beauty in places shaped by ordinary people, which become repositories for memory and feelings. Her seemingly familiar yet often darkly mysterious sites evoke memories, encourage reflection, and allude to the transient nature of life. A revelatory introduction to the spiritualist abstractions of the Swedish painter and lifelong friend of Hilma af Klint

Until now, the Swedish painter Anna Cassel (1860-1937) had mostly been famed for her paintings of landscapes and urban environments, with motifs from the Swedish rural counties Jämtland and Västmanland, and from Stockholm. She is less known for her deep involvement with spiritualist groups, the circle of Hilma af Klint and the occult art group known as The Five. Only now, nearly a century after her death, is Cassel's significant, mesmerizing and original contribution to abstract and spiritual art garnering attention, not least thanks to her lifelong friendship and collaboration with Af Klint. The two women met while studying at Slöjdskolan in Stockholm and later were part of the group The Five in 1896, along with Sigrid Hedman, Mathilda Nilsson and Cornelia Cederberg. The Five began as a regular spiritualist group but soon experimented with seances, developing the automatism technique used decades later by the Surrealists. Cassel, hailing from a wealthy family, also financially supported Af Klint throughout much of her career.
In this beautifully produced volume, the life and work of Anna Cassels is presented for the first time to a wider audience, revealing her as a creator of gorgeous, radiant abstractions and spiritual diagrams. Cassel is introduced to a wider audience in two essays that make clear that the collaboration between her and Af Klint was much deeper than previously known. The first and only monograph to give a comprehensive examination of acclaimed American artist Sarah Sze's painting practice

A vase is never merely a container. As Georges Braque once said, "the vase gives form to emptiness": ever since the earliest human civilizations, this object has had a purpose that is greater than its function and it perennially invites experimentation in shape and expression.

William Eggleston’s standing as one of the masters of color photography is widely acknowledged. But the gradual steps by which he transformed from an unknown into a leading artist are less well known. Steidl has undertaken to trace these steps in an ambitious series of publications. Before Color (2010) explored Eggleston’s revelatory early black-and-white images, while Chromes is an edit of more than 5,000 Kodachromes and Ektachromes taken from 10 chronologically ordered binders found in a safe in the Eggleston Artistc Trust. This archive had once been used by John Szarkowski, who selected the 48 images printed in Eggleston’s seminal book William Eggleston’s Guide, while the rest of the archive has remained almost entirely unpublished. Featuring a newly designed slipcase, this three-volume publication presents Eggleston’s early Memphis imagery, his testing of color and compositional strategies, and the development toward the “poetic snapshot.” In short, Chromes shows a master in the making.

From July 12th 2019 to January 5th 2020, the Fondation Cartier presented Trees, an ambitious exhibition devoted to trees, these exceptional living beings with unexpected faculties and yet widely threatened today. Underestimated by biologists for a long time—like the entirety of the plant kingdom—in recent years they have been the subject of scientific discoveries that have allowed us to see these organisms in a new light. Interestingly, some of these are among the oldest and largest members of this community of living things. Artists have long been inspired by children—by their imagination, creativity and unique ways of seeing and being in the world—and have made work that depicts and involves children as collaborators, that represents or mimics their ways of drawing or telling stories, that highlights their unique cultures, and that addresses ideas of innocence and spontaneity closely associated with children. To Begin Again: Artists and Childhood surveys how artists have reflected on and contributed to notions of childhood from the early 20th century to the present. Ornaments are omnipresent: they can be found on buildings, fabrics, jewelry, tiles, ceramics and wallpaper. Scorned at the outset of the modern age, ornament has long since returned to architecture and influences design drafts as much as tattoo motifs. In New Grammar of Ornament, German architect and designer Thomas Weil compares current ornamental objects with the results of archaeological research on ornamental artifacts, and concludes that there is an anthropological constant. From the recurring arrangements of stripes, rectangles, triangles and dots and the frequency of the forms of floral ornaments used, he derives a new “grammar of ornament.” More than 160 years after Owen Jones' publication of that name, New Grammar of Ornament is a new reference work. It categorizes the variety of ornamental forms used worldwide and places them in a major art and cultural-historical context.
Thomas Weil (born 1944) studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich and early on focused on interior design and design. Since 1974 he has been working on the subject of ornamentation, which he has incorporated into numerous facades and walls as an artist. He gives national and international lectures and courses on ornamentation and is a lecturer on ornamentation at the Munich Academy of Design and Art.

Though he has engaged with a variety of mediums—watercolor, photography, sculpture—Brazilian artist Luiz Zerbini (born 1959) has devoted the past several years to the creation of monotypes. He selects leaves, flowers and branches for their distinctive shapes and textures and places them on an inked metal plate. He then lays a large sheet of paper over the plate so that the botanical compositions are transferred onto the page. The result is a large-scale monotype print that immerses the viewer in the minute details of a plant’s anatomy.

High contrast, with a minimal palette of browns, blacks and greens, these images blur the distinction between figuration and abstraction. Over the past four years, the artist has created more than 300 monotypes in this style, working from within major museum institutions in Brazil. Now, Zerbini has collaborated with the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain to collect the entire series in a single large-format volume. In these images, readers can appreciate his dedication to both the craft of printmaking and the preservation of the world’s natural beauty in unexpected ways.

Cabinets of curiosities fascinated people of the 16th and 17th centuries. Photographer Joel Meyerowitz (born 1938) began photographing redheads in 1978 against the contrasting blue backdrop of Cape Cod. The portraits from this period are collected in this new edition of Meyerowitz's 1991 photobook Redheads, featuring 16 additional images. After running an ad in the Provincetown Advocate, Meyerowitz began collecting the experiences of people who grew up with red hair, in addition to photographing them. Making up only two or three percent of the world’s population, their stories of schoolyard bullying and self-acceptance illustrate a broader narrative of growth and beauty.
Despite cultural and racial distinctions between redheads, the phenotypic association between the subjects brings a sense of familiality to the collection of portraits.
Meyerowitz describes how red hair and its reaction to light evokes a sense of the color film process. He is known for his transition to color film during a period of resistance to color photography. “My way of making portraits is not by getting down on my hands and knees, nor climbing high on a ladder, nor getting into bed with a celebrity,” Meyerowitz writes, “but simply standing eye to eye with anyone who has found their way to me, young or old. I need only one or two sheets of film and the patience to see it through.” This hardcover edition includes previously unseen portraits.

Danzig Baldaev's father was an academic, an ethnologist who found himself imprisoned under Soviet rule as an enemy of the people. In fact much of Baldaev's family moved through the Soviet prison system, while he became a guard.
